Honors English 10
Honors English 10 is a course designed to begin preparing students for the rigors and challenges of the college level Advanced Placement English courses. Students will develop into stronger writers as they utilize advanced literary devices and prepare for the Advanced Placement English exam required in AP English 11. Honors English 10 will explore the same texts as English 10, but with increased complexity and sophistication and an additional emphasis on close reading and literary analysis. Students will also be invited to dialogue with two additional texts, Shelley’s Frankenstein, and the modern classic, I Am Malala. Class discussions and assignments focus on more careful observation of text with consideration of structure, style, themes, social and historical value, figurative language, and analysis of literary techniques. A love of reading will be encouraged as students are given the opportunity to choose their own books to read and discuss, and they will be invited into service projects which give them the chance to tell other people’s stories and educate younger people about engagement in literacy.
