Christian Education: Building Walls or Building Lives?

As we reflect on the mission God has entrusted to us at Ontario Christian School, we are continually reminded that Christian education is not about building walls. It is about building lives. It is not about insulating our children from the world, but about setting boundaries in order to prepare them to faithfully engage it.

There can sometimes be a misconception that a Christian school exists to place students in a kind of protective bubble, shielding them from every challenge or competing idea. While we are deeply committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and Christ-centered environment, our calling is far greater than isolation. Our goal is discipleship.

Jesus Himself modeled this for us. He did not withdraw from the world. He entered into it. He walked among people from every background, spoke truth with grace, and called His followers to be “the light of the world” and “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13-16). Salt does not fulfill its purpose by staying in the shaker, and light cannot shine if it is hidden away. In the same way, our students are not meant to remain separate from the world but to be equipped to influence it for Christ.

In many ways, this journey of Christian education is like an apprenticeship. An apprentice does not simply study from a distance. Rather, they learn by walking closely alongside a master, observing, practicing, failing, growing, and trying again. Similarly, our students are not merely taught biblical truths as abstract ideas. They are invited to live them out daily in community. Through relationships with teachers, coaches, and mentors, they see faith modeled in real time and learn how to respond with grace, pursue excellence, navigate challenges, and love others well. This is formation, not just information.

At Ontario Christian, we see education as a partnership, rooted in a shared faith in God, between the school, family, and church. Parents are the primary disciplers of their children, and we come alongside to guide, support, and encourage. Together, we are shaping young men and women who know not only what they believe but why they believe it and how to live it out with courage and compassion.

This means we do not shy away from engaging real-world questions, cultural challenges, or diverse perspectives. Instead, we teach students to think critically through a biblical lens, to respond with wisdom, and to stand firm in their faith while demonstrating Christ-like love. As Scripture reminds us, we are to be “in the world but not of the world” (John 17:14-18). That balance is at the heart of a theologically Reformed Christian education.

We are grateful to see how this vision is already taking root in our community. Families consistently share that what makes Ontario Christian unique is not just the academics, athletics, and arts but the genuine care, strong relationships, and Christ-centered character development their children experience each day. These are the fruits of a community committed to walking together in faith.

As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to guiding students, not guarding them from every difficulty, but setting appropriate boundaries with clear markers to equip them to navigate life with a steadfast faith in Christ. Like apprentices studying for a lifelong calling, our students are learning to follow Jesus not only within the walls of our campus but wherever He leads them. Our prayer is that each student who walks through our doors will leave not only prepared for college and career but prepared to live boldly as a follower of Jesus wherever God places them.
