The Tabitha Factor: Finding Greatness in Daily Faithfulness
In Acts 9, we are introduced to a remarkable woman named Tabitha (also known as Dorcas). Scripture tells us she was “full of good works and acts of charity.” Her life, though seemingly ordinary, left an extraordinary legacy. When she became ill and died, the Christian community of Joppa mourned deeply. Widows gathered, showing the garments she had made for them, grieving the loss of someone whose kindness had touched their lives in tangible ways. Through Peter’s prayer, she was miraculously restored, and her story inspired many to believe in the Lord.
“Greatness is rarely achieved by doing great things but instead by doing good things repetitively.” – Jeff Manion
But Tabitha’s impact came not from one grand gesture, but from the quiet, daily rhythm of her service. She sewed garments for widows, day after day, bringing them warmth, dignity, and hope. As Jeff Manion writes in Dream Big, Think Small, Tabitha’s legacy is a testament to the power of doing good things repetitively. Greatness, he reminds us, is rarely about extraordinary events but about consistent, faithful action done in love.
This is the heart of the Tabitha Factor: the recognition that small, ordinary acts, repeated over time, create a life of extraordinary impact.
The Power of Holy Redundancy
We often search for something great to do, something big that will mark our lives with significance. But in chasing the spectacular, we risk missing the steady stream of opportunities to serve right where we are. Tabitha teaches us that goodness often looks ordinary. It may even feel mundane. Yet in the quiet repetition of kindness, God weaves something eternal.
“Day in and day out, Tabitha sits and sews… What was spectacular about Tabitha was the sheer consistency and faithfulness of her devoted love.” – Jeff Manion
For Tabitha, it was sewing. For us, it might be showing up for work each day, caring for children, teaching lessons, encouraging friends, or serving our community. These small acts may never make headlines, but they matter deeply.
Encouragement for Educators
This message speaks especially to those of us in the field of education. No one goes into teaching for prestige or accolades. Much of the impact educators make goes unseen for years, perhaps forever. Yet like Tabitha, teachers embody a holy redundancy: showing up every day to guide, encourage, and shape young lives. Each lesson taught, each encouraging word spoken, and each act of patience contribute to a legacy of love and service.
The holy redundancy of showing up day in and day out makes an impact in the lives of students who are learning to navigate life in a changing and challenging world.
Greatness in education, as in faith, is built not by occasional big moments but by daily faithfulness. The seeds planted in classrooms may take years to bear fruit, but they are seeds of eternal value.
Living the Tabitha Factor
The call of the Tabitha Factor is a simple yet profound message for all of us: embrace the ordinary, do good consistently, and trust God with the results. Greatness is found in the steady rhythm of faithfulness. As we live out our callings, whether in our professions, parenting, ministry, or community service, we carry forward Tabitha’s legacy of compassion, consistency, and love.
Let us take encouragement from her story. Our daily acts of faithfulness may feel small, but in God’s kingdom, they matter. Day in and day out, as we serve others with love, we leave behind a legacy of hope that can change lives forever.
