What Is a Reformed Worldview?
Understanding the Foundation of Faith-Based Learning at Ontario Christian
At Ontario Christian School, we often use the phrase “Reformed worldview” to describe the foundation of our Christ-centered education. But what does that really mean?
Rooted in the tradition of the Protestant Reformation, a Reformed worldview is much more than a theological stance; it’s a lens through which we see and engage all of life. It shapes how we teach, lead, and help students grow as disciples of Jesus.
Let’s explore what it means to think and live “Reformed,” and how this biblical perspective guides everything we do at OC.
The Core of a Reformed Worldview
1. God’s Sovereignty Over All
At the heart of the Reformed tradition is the belief that God is in control of every aspect of creation. There is no part of life, whether academic, artistic, athletic, or relational, that falls outside of His lordship. This truth calls us to honor Christ in all things.
2. Creation, Fall, Redemption, Restoration
The Bible tells one unified story:
- Creation – God made the world good.
- Fall – Sin broke the world.
- Redemption – Jesus restores what is broken.
- Restoration – God is making all things new.
This “four-part story” helps our students understand the world around them, its beauty and brokenness, and their God-given role in His redemptive plan.
3. Scripture as the Ultimate Authority
God’s Word isn’t just referenced in Bible class; it’s the foundation of all truth and the guide for all learning. At OC, every subject is taught through the lens of Scripture.
4. Covenantal Relationships
We believe education is a partnership between the home, the church, and the school. We come alongside parents to support their God-given calling to raise children in the fear and knowledge of the Lord. We’re not just educating minds, we’re shaping hearts.
5. Faith Integration in Every Subject
In a Reformed worldview, there is no divide between “sacred” and “secular.” Whether students are studying math, science, literature, or the arts, they are encouraged to see God’s truth and purpose in all of it.
6. Cultural Engagement, Not Escape
Rather than withdrawing from the world, we prepare students to engage it thoughtfully, faithfully, and courageously. We aim to raise up Christian leaders who transform culture rather than conform to it.
7. Christ’s Lordship in Every Corner of Life
As Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper once said,
“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ… does not cry, ‘Mine!’”
That’s the heartbeat of our mission.
How This Shapes Life at Ontario Christian
Our Reformed worldview is not an add-on; it’s woven into every fiber of school life. It shapes:
- Our mission: Growing Christian Leaders
- Our academics: Truth-seeking, not just test-taking
- Our community: Discipleship through grace and accountability
- Our decision-making: Guided by Scripture and prayer
- Our admissions: Focused on families who value faith integration
From chapel to curriculum, from athletics to student leadership, our goal is to help students see the world as God sees it and live accordingly.
Anchored in Heritage, Embracing the Future
While Ontario Christian has grown and looks different from when it was founded in a one-room schoolhouse over 80 years ago, we remain firmly grounded in the Reformed theological tradition. It’s what gives us clarity in a changing world and consistency in our mission.
In a culture of confusion and compromise, we continue to stand on the truth of God’s Word and raise up students who will:
- Think critically
- Lead courageously
- Serve faithfully
- Love boldly
All for the glory of God.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Proverbs 1:7
